I had just finished watching Strawberry Panic after having it more than a year in my hdd. Thought I could jot a bit on it before deleting it off.
Strawberry Panic happens around 3 schools in 1 ground. The school were St. Miata, St.Spica and St. Lulim.
Nagisa had just transferred to Astraea and begin school in St.Miata. She was late and lost because the school ground is way too big. While she is lost, she met a pretty girl with greyish purple hair. The girl was Etoile-sama aka Shizuma. Having met for the first time, Etoile-sama kissed her and that's where everything started.
Nagisa is popular for I don't know what reason. Even though she's loud, annoyingly sort of stupid at time and clueless... she is Etoile-sama's fav. She was portrayed as popular later in series by Miyako but, I don't know where that came from.
At Spica, Hikari was the popular young girl. She has an affair with her senior, Spica's Prince - Amane Ohtori. Unlike Nagisa, we knew why Hikari was popular. She's pretty, cute doll angelic like and has beautiful voice which is why she's in the choir team.
As the story goes along, Shizuma aka Etoile-sama weird attitude is because she is weird, literally. Sort of oji-sama hentai pervert type of weird. It so happened that 3 years before Nagisa transferred, Etoile - sama fallen in love with a sick girl, Kaori. However to be Etoile - a representative of the 3 school aka idol, you need to be in pair. Because of not wanting Kaori to die without achieving anything and as sign of their love, they entered Kaori and Shizuma for Etoile candidacy and they won. Right after they won, she passed away.
Kaori was elegant, cute angelic much like Hikari and she was sick. That gave you reasons to feel pity and love her as a character. What doesn't go along is that they try to make us think that Nagisa is comparable to Kaori. Just in what way is it that Nagisa is similar with Kaori? When it gets to that part, I started to think that Shizuma is actually pretty mentally ill and suffered too much that she could actually see Nagisa as comparably cute.
In terms of expression... both Etoile and Amane's are dull. They try to make Etoile that way as an effect of losing someone she loves, however she just seems like a kissing predator on the loose. Amane doesn't do much other than riding her horse. Acted like a cool prince and argue on not going to participate in etoile candidacy. Occasionally, Hikaru will come by watch her train and they talk over the fence while she's still on her horse. I wonder what sort of love is that...
Almost all activities in this school are not monitored by any teacher. You can only see teacher once when Nagisa missing her lucky ribbon, the teacher were there to show her missing item box and once in the bus of summer school.
If I could think of any worth mentioning character in this story, that would be Yaya, Hikari's roommate. She is pretty, rebellious and try to rape Hikari at one time. And she tried that on her after Hikari's almost gotten rape by Kaname. Yes... the girls in this story like to force another. They not only have kissing predator on the loose, they have Kaname - the girl whom try to make Hikari love her by forcing sexual action on her and Yaya- A roommate that secretly in love with Hikari.
I like her. She's the most prettiest and have strong characteristic among all of other characters. However she's just a stand by supporting char.
But it wasn't all that bad and I personally likes episode 8. Nagisa lost her umbrella after lending it to a St.Lulim junior. The next day raining she shares umbrella with Etoile-sama. Etoile-sama then saw Hikari and Yaya sharing a small umbrella, which is Nagisa's. They had to run while clutching each other. Upon seeing that, Etoile said to herself that her umbrella is too big.
After watching 24 episodes I can say that it's not a successful anime compares to marimite. Plot wise, it has plot but not deep enough. Maybe if they got more budgets on animation, they could give better and deeper character and plot situation. I cannot make it, what the series path is. Maybe is just plain yuri/shoujo-ai satisfaction or perhaps what the author tries to tell is that normal plain girl with bad hair sense and clueless can have chance having someone like Etoile as lover.
